Expectations are rarely neutral.

But the disappointment is not always about them.
It is about the gap between our prediction and their reality.

The brain is a prediction machine. The prefrontal cortex constantly forecasts outcomes based on past experience and personal beliefs. When reality violates these predictions, the brain experiences “prediction error,” which we feel as frustration, surprise, or disappointment.

Stoic philosophy warned against attaching emotional peace to other people’s actions. Epictetus taught that suffering often comes from expecting the world to behave according to our personal script. Freedom came from understanding what is truly within our control.

People were told they would meet strangers. Before going out, makeup was applied to their face to look like a noticeable scar. They were shown the scar in a mirror.

They went out and met others.

After the interaction, they were asked how it felt.

Almost everyone said the same things.
People stared at them.
People seemed uncomfortable.
People treated them differently.

Then the mirror was shown again.
There was no scar.

Just before they stepped out, the researcher had quietly removed the makeup, calling it a “touch-up.”
They had walked out with a normal face the entire time.

Nothing on their face had changed.
Only the image they carried inside.

That experiment made me reflect on my own life.

How many reactions, rejections, or missed chances were not about the world, but about how I saw myself in that moment?

This is why a new year does not automatically change a life. The calendar changes.
